On the 19th March 2021, two SACAN member organisations based in Ekurhuleni, 360 Degrees Environmental Organisation (360DEO) and Community Empowerment Committee (COMEC), participated in the Global Strike Action event that took place at the Ekurhuleni Municipal Head Office in Germiston, where they were joined by comrades from GreenPeace Africa for an art demonstration.
The artistic strike action focused on silently campaigning for a fossil fuel-free Municipality and to engage community members visiting the offices on the importance of building climate-resilient South Africa for all citizens. The event was a success since it was a center of attraction with many community members asked how they can participate in such events including the police, who approached us with encouraging messages to further influence climate action.
Unfortunately, municipal security personnel prevented the collecting of signatures during the demonstration, as it was registered as a silent action. Furthermore, the demonstration highlighted the need for SACAN marketing material to create more visibility for the network and the organisations we present beyond Extinction Rebellion only.
